The 1992 Cougar
The 1992 model year was essentially a carryover one for the Cougar, the second of a two-year cycle, with nothing much changed on the outside or inside save for some new exterior colors and minor revisions to the options list. Remaining the standard engine on the LS model was the 3.8L V6. The 5.0L V8 was optional in the LS and standard in the XR7. The fuel tank capacity was reduced by 1 gallon in all models.
Cougar LS
The 1992 Cougar LS interior featured a handsome new steering wheel and standard cloth and leather-trimmed seats.
The optional full electronic instrument cluster on the LS kept all data very well organized and readily available.
Cougar XR7
In addition to Black, Oxford White, and Electric Red Metallic, the XR7 received two unique new monochromatic colors: Silver and Mocha Frost. Both are considered very rare due to the limited production of XR7s and late availability of those colors.
The 1992 Cougar XR7 received new 16″ finned wheels. This was the only model year that this particular 16″ wheel was offered, and it was only offered on the Cougar XR7, making it extremely rare.
The XR7 dash received similar woodgrain trim as the LS model.
25th Anniversary Cougar
Since 1992 was another anniversary year for the big Cat, Mercury announced that a 25th Anniversary Cougar model would be offered. Sporting a unique Tourmaline Green paint scheme, handsome BBS-style wheels and a sumptuous green-and-tan leather/Ultrasuede interior, this special edition Cougar was truly the epitome of the 1992 model year. Initially Ford’s press release mentioned that all 25th models would have the 5.0L V8, but at some point the V6 was added to the mix. The production total of 25th anniversary models was 4,800, including both the V6 and V8. See the 25th Anniversary Cougar page for more information.
Conclusion
The quality of features continued to be impressive; however, sales were not. Ford was very cautious in their plans for the Cougar in the next few model years. The 2-door sport coupe market was rapidly shrinking due to the sales of sport utility vehicles, and Ford was quick to notice this. Steps would be taken to cut costs on the Cougar, starting with the 1993 model year. A major refreshening of the car, long planned but delayed due to sales and the economy, was pushed back until 1994.
